Today, a Russian court imposed a fine on the Wikimedia Foundation of 2 million roubles ($27,000). The official reason: the failing to delete ‘misinformation” related to the Russian military from the Wikipedia database.
The information about this legal decision was announced by the court representatives.
It is not the first time that Russia limits what types of information can appear online in its geographic area. These restrictions became particularly harsh after the Russian Federation invaded Ukraine last year.
Since then, a number of companies have been affected, including TikTok, Telegram, Zoom, Discord, Pinterest, and Facebook. The censorship of online resources, however, has been strong in this country for much longer.
Wikimedia, a foundation that runs a free and public information resource Wikipedia, already received a similar fine last year because of a refusal to remove two Ukraine war-related articles, including one titled “Evaluations of Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine” (or “Оценки вторжения России на Украину (2022)” in the original language).
This time, the fine was imposed due to alleged misinformation presented in Wikipedia articles, related to Russian military units.
Wikimedia is now deciding if it should appeal the ruling. According to the organization, successful appeals are very rare in the practice of Russian courts.
