New record: 12.4-inch rollable OLED screen unveiled by Samsung (Video)

At its annual Display Week in Los Angeles, Samsung unveiled a 12.4-inch rollable OLED display panel.

The company calls it Rollable Flex, and the screen can be completely rolled up.

Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen a rollable display concept, but Samsung’s invention is a step ahead of the competition as it’s the biggest screen yet and rolls up into a tiny roll, like a paper scroll.

The panel can be scaled (i.e. expanded) from 49mm to 254.4mm, which is also an impressive achievement considering the fact that current rollable displays can only be extended 3x times compared to their original size.

Samsung Display said that the new screen uses an O-shaped axis that facilitates the rolling process.

In addition to Rollable Flex, Samsung introduced the Flex In & Out OLED panel, which can be flexed in both directions, unlike the current technology that only allows OLED screens to be flexed in one direction.

The Korean tech giant also introduced the world’s first OLED panel with an integrated fingerprint scanner and heart rate sensor.

Current implementations of similar sensing technologies rely on a small sensor area, and Samsung’s solution allows you to unlock the phone with a finger touch anywhere on the screen surface.

In this product, the light-sensing organic photodiode (OPD) is built into the panel itself. The technology can also read blood pressure, heart rate and stress level by monitoring the contraction and relaxation of blood vessels.
