The world is learning from the Ukrainian experience, and not just regarding the political aspect. Companies are starting to introduce new electronic platforms – particularly military drones and robots – that are built considering lessons learned through the war against the invading Russian forces.
Taiwan is among the leaders in electronics manufacturing, and its latest drone models showcased publicly just yesterday are not an unexpected development but a rather logical roadmap that will be followed by other nations in the near future.
According to the official announcement, the new Taiwanese military drones are developed specifically for so-called asymmetric warfare. This capability is intended to make the military forces more agile overall, especially when facing strong adversaries. This is important for Taiwan in the context of ongoing tensions with China.
Analysts note that this display of its drone capabilities is quite rare in Taiwan. Here, the latest models were demonstrated by the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST) which is directly affiliated with the country’s military industry.
Newly demoed models include the Albatross II surveillance drone, Cardinal III UAV, kamikaze drones (also known as loitering munitions), as well as combat drones capable of operating using data links with global positioning system satellites.
Art Chang, the head of NCSIST, noted that the war in Ukraine brought everyone’s attention back to drones. Taiwan’s military has ambitious plans in this area, aiming to produce around 3,000 drones next year through partnerships with the industry.
