Last Friday, Italy’s Data Protection Authority temporarily banned ChatGPT. Potentially existing data privacy issues were cited as the reason for this decision.

Many criticize Italy’s move to ban ChatGPT. The country’s deputy prime minister already voiced his concern that blocking the popular artificial intelligence platform was excessive.
OpenAI decided to limit access to ChatGPT in Italy after the national Data Protection Authority said it fails to verify the user’s age, in particular – to check if a user is aged 13 or above. Such specific request has been issued to OpenAI by the agency previously.
Italy is the first Western country to limit a chatbot that operates on the basis of artificial intelligence algorithms.
“I find the decision of the Privacy Watchdog that forced #ChatGPT to prevent access from Italy disproportionate,” said Matteo Salvini, Deputy Prime Minister.
He also noted that this ban could ultimately hinder the country’s technology and innovation sectors, and called for a rapid resolution of this issue. He also stressed that regulating AI-related products and associated procedures is normal, but things like banning should be done responsibly and only when it is really needed.
OpenAI already announced it is actively working to further reduce the amount of personal data in data sets used to train ChatGPT and similar systems.
