UK is planning to install AI cameras on certain highways to prevent drivers from littering by detecting when they throw trash out of their car windows.
The concerns about the increasing litter problem on British highways are growing along with the amount of trash that drivers throw straight out of their cars.
In an effort to resolve this issue, the National Highways organization, which is responsible for maintaining and improving major roads in the United Kingdom, is turning to artificial intelligence and will be employing special AI cameras to detect disorderly drivers.
National Highways will be running this initiative in partnership with a subsidiary of East Hampshire county council.
The first cameras powered by artificial intelligence image processing tech are already being installed in selected locations. The cameras will initially be placed in British lay-bys (roadside vehicle stop areas).
Offenders may face a fine of up to £100 ($126), which is a standard ‘rate’ for those who pollute the roadsides. But now, officers would no longer need to go through hours of CCTV footage as the cameras will be able to automatically send the images to law and public order enforcers.
During the first campaign stage, the cameras will be deployed in the South East of England.
