Eight additional Leopard 2 main battle tanks will be sent to Ukraine from Canada.
This decision was recently announced by Canadian Minister of Defense Anita Anand. Together with these tanks, the Armed Forces of Canada will also donate an armored recovery vehicle, air defense missiles, various support equipment, and thousands of ammunition rounds.
“Canada will donate approximately 8,000 rounds of 155mm ammunition, as well as 12 air defense missiles sourced from Canadian Armed Forces’ (CAF) inventory, to sustain the air defense systems currently deployed in Ukraine. Canada will also donate more than 1,800 rounds of 105 mm tank training ammunition. This ammunition will support the donation of Leopard 1 tanks announced by Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands,” commented Anita Anand during a virtual meeting of Ukraine Defense Contact Group.
Canada has already delivered four Leopard 2 main battle tanks to Ukraine, four more remain to be delivered according to the previous commitment made in February. All eight newly provided units will be delivered within a few weeks.
It is also important to note that Canada is one of the main supporters of Ukraine’s fight for its independence. Since the start of the Russian invasion, this country has provided more than $1 billion in military assistance of various forms.
