Japan’s military is currently evaluating Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service and is considering adopting the technology in the next fiscal year.

While the Japanese Ministry of Defense already has access to communication satellites in geostationary orbit, incorporating Starlink’s technology, which is managed by Musk’s SpaceX, would introduce a network of satellites in low Earth orbit.
Given the increasing global concern about communication jamming or satellite attacks during conflicts, various countries are actively exploring ways to enhance their resilience.

Since March, Japan’s Self-Defense Forces have been conducting tests on Starlink, deploying the system in approximately 10 locations for training purposes.
Ukraine has already begun utilizing Starlink technology on the battlefield, while Russia is attempting to impede its use in the region. Musk previously mentioned that SpaceX cannot financially support the continuous use of Starlink in Ukraine indefinitely. However, now a large part of the funds necessary to sustain this service are being provided by Pentagon.
The U.S. Defense Department recently announced a contract for Starlink services in the United States.
