After laying off large numbers of staff in a relatively short time, Twitter has to solve challenges related to maintaining the same level of operations as before, when the size of its workforce was significantly greater.

Reports about the decreased overall efficiency of content moderation and recent major downtimes experienced by a large number of Twitter users are nothing new. But this may be not all: according to the people familiar with the inside matters, Twitter may be also suffering from its reduced capacity to prevent trolling and harassment.
According to the article published by BBC, the company’s takeover by Elon Musk which was followed by mass layoffs coincided with a new wave of coordinated disinformation and online abuse.
Similar assessments of the current situation on the social network also come from academic researchers and individual Twitter users who say the number of abusive user profiles spiked very recently.
BBC interviewed several current and former employees who worked at Twitter – according to them, the network has the necessary features to ensure the safety of its users, but despite the increasing level of automation, these protective features still need a considerable share of maintenance by a human hand. This is difficult to accomplish on an adequate or higher than the adequate level when the company is in a constant “chaotic working environment”.
The personnel reduction heavily impacted teams that were primarily responsible for creating and supporting Twitter’s safety measures. For example, the entire team that created nudge buttons was fired. According to the company’s internal research, this feature alone reduced trolling levels by 60%. People familiar with internal matters say there is “nobody working with those things now”.
