It is not clear what type of explosive device is carried by these drones, but it seems they are capable of performing strikes at least against stationary sea targets.
The fact of the Russian army using unmanned surface vehicles (or marine drones) appeared in a message published by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny shared his concern about the use of marine drones with U.S. General Mark Milley.
Previously, a video showing the attack on a bridge performed by an unidentified sea kamikaze drone was not confirmed.
Such technological change, however, cannot be called unexpected. Unmanned seaborne vehicles are being developed by multiple countries, so it was just a matter of time until they appear in the Russian military, too, notes Defense Express.
In order to create this kind of unmanned vehicle, the Russian Federation had to develop three key components: communication, navigation, and weapon control sub-systems.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces have marine drones, and from their experience, it is known that these unmanned vehicles need a fairly powerful data channel to relay not just control-related but also visual information, including images from cameras.
Also, they need to have the capability of manual control, when especially when the target is moving. Initiating an explosion based on coordinates only is not a reliable method to hit the target, although it could be an alternative when the drone’s data link is jammed electronically, or when the distance between the drone’s starting point and the target is large.
It is not known whether the Russian drone is able to attack moving targets, because the only confirmed report mentions the attack on a stationary object.
