Across the world video gaming has grown at an astronomical rate, with more gamers than ever before across both genders and all ages.
Unfortunately, at the same time the rise of addiction across the world has also been prominent, particularly when it comes to opioids and alcohol. Of course, it would be silly to put the two together and state that the two are related. In fact, according to studies, it’s quite the opposite.
As more and more people are checking into a drug rehab centre, studies are finding that video gaming can actually aid with addiction, reducing cravings and helping with recovery.
One particular study used Tetris as the game in question, with results finding that it can help reduce cravings in minutes and help decrease addiction by up to 70 percent.
The study, which tracked around 30 students, saw them play Tetris throughout the week and at multiple times per day assessed their cravings. What was found that the concentration and engagement that video gaming offers reduced the amount of cravings significantly.
Jackie Andrade, the lead on the study at Plymouth University said, “Playing a visually interesting game like Tetris occupies the mental processes that support that imagery; it is hard to imagine something vividly and play Tetris at the same time.”
Of course, it’s that diverted focus and attention which primarily aids in reducing cravings, while many games are also designed to improve cognitive behaviour which in turn can also increase chances of remaining in recovery and reducing cravings.
For example, brain training games are specifically designed to improve things like memory, focus, sharp thinking and more, all of which will make you think much more clearly when it comes to making the right decisions when it comes to recovery.
That’s why at many rehab centres, gaming is being encouraged, particularly for those who do have an interest in it. Of course, it isn’t going to solely help treat people, addiction is a complex beast that requires therapy, structured routines and a complete change in lifestyle, but integrating gaming into that lifestyle can certainly be beneficial.
There are dangers too though. Gaming in itself can be addicted, and it’s important to note that you don’t want to transfer any addictive traits into gaming, especially when it comes to gambling, ensuring that gameplay is responsible, and measured, or ultimately it can have a similar destructive effect that other addictions can have on relationships, jobs and the like.
